What is a bed base?

A bed base is a flexible support on which the mattress is placed. It consists of a metal or wooden frame on which a series of sheets of wood or other material are fitted transversely. The wooden ones are usually made of beech or, in their cheaper range, poplar. They are also manufactured with fiberglass sheets although they are less widespread. In double sizes, the frame has a central beam.

The firmness of the bed base will depend on the number and width of slats. Likewise, it can offer firmness regulation systems to adapt to the different weight of users. The adaptation is achieved by grouping or releasing a certain number of sheets by moving some tensioners.

An articulated bed base has a movable upper and lower part so that it can be adjusted to different positions.

For people with back problems, sleeping on an adjustable bed that is positioned at a slight incline (30º to 45º, for example) may be comfortable, with the torso positioned higher than the lower extremities and a support under the legs. knees to bend them at a slight angle.

The upholstered bases

Upholstered bases are structures that serve as support for our mattresses; They are composed of a perimeter steel structure that can have from one to five steel crossbars for reinforcement. This structure is the main axis of the upholstered base and on it you can have a board on which we will place the mattress. This board, when the base is upholstered in 3D mesh, has microperforations to facilitate air flow to the underside of the mattress.

What support should I choose?

Support depends, in most cases, on the type of mattress you want to place on it. For spring, biocel and memory foam mattresses, any slatted base or upholstered base is suitable. However, for latex mattresses, the base must be a bed base with wooden slats (not plasticized). Latex mattresses require perspiration on both sides and that is why they require slatted bases. It is necessary to mention that no mattress should rest on spring bases or other types of bases susceptible to deformation, since in this case the useful life of the mattress will be considerably reduced.
